NEWPORT Gwent Dragons have signed Gavin Henson on a two-year contract - with the former Wales and Lions ace declaring he "still has loads to offer".

The 35-year-old fly-half/centre will head to Rodney Parade next season from Bristol, returning home after five years in the Aviva Premiership.

The playmaker, a Grand Slam winner in 2005 and 2008, is seen as the perfect man to help in the development of burgeoning Dragons backs Hallam Amos, Tyler Morgan, Jack Dixon and Ashton Hewitt.

Henson said: “I have really enjoyed my time at Bristol but when the opportunity came along to join the Dragons and return to Wales, I couldn’t say no.

"I still have loads to offer and I know what Kingsley (Jones, head coach) wants from me.

"I’m especially looking forward to pitting myself against the current Welsh players, and hopefully becoming a catalyst and mentor for the tremendous talent that is in the Dragons squad.”

The region last week secured the services of former South Africa full-back Zane Kirchner from Leinster and Jones believes they have pulled off another transfer coup.

“This is a hugely important signing and exactly what we need to complement our existing squad,” said the head coach, about the 33-times capped Henson.

“I am delighted that Gavin sees the potential within the region and that he is excited about the prospect of assisting this group of backs with their development.

“Having worked with Gavin previously I am fully aware that he will bring critical experience on the field and inside the training environment.”

Henson made his name with the Ospreys and, after brief spells with Toulon and Cardiff Blues, headed for England where he played for London Welsh and Bath.

He then helped Bristol return to the Premiership but has endured an injury-plagued season for the West Country side, who appear to be destined for relegation.

However, Henson showed that he remains a quality operator with a man of the match performance against Bath last month and the acquisition of such a high-profile player, albeit towards the end of his career, will excite the Rodney Parade faithful.

“It’s fantastic news for Dragons’ supporters and Welsh rugby in general that we are bringing back to Wales one of the finest players of a generation,” said chief executive Stuart Davies.

“I hope that securing the signature of one of the biggest names in the sport will give our supporters a timely lift and renewed hope for what next season might bring, when Gavin’s class and experience are added to the potential of our exciting back line.”
