WALES wing Hallam Amos has lost his fitness race for Newport Gwent Dragons’ Judgement Day clash with the Scarlets at Principality Stadium, writes Chris Kirwan.

The Dragons had been hopeful that the 22-year-old would make his return from a shoulder injury in the Guinness PRO12 derby against their rivals from west Wales.

But Amos, who has been out of action since suffering a shoulder injury when attempting to score against Australia in November, has not been given the green light to return.

The Dragons have just two remaining games, at Edinburgh on April 28 and against Cardiff Blues on May 6, for the 11-times capped to prove his fitness for Wales’ summer Tests against Samoa and Tonga.

The Rodney Parade region are also still without Ashton Hewitt for the clash with the play-off chasing Scarlets.

The winger has been absent since suffering a concussion against the Ospreys on New Year’s Day, a blow that forced the uncapped 22-year-old to withdraw from Wales’ Six Nations squad.

The Dragons are down to their sole fit senior scrum-half because Sarel Pretorius (hamstring) and Tavis Knoyle (wrist) are sidelined.

Charlie Davies played the full 80 minutes in last weekend’s 29-14 loss to Zebre in Parma with wing Adam Hughes preferred as his cover rather than academy prospect Owain Leonard.

The 19-year-old travelled with the squad to Italy but won’t be thrown in at the deep end at Principality Stadium with forwards coach Ceri Jones saying: “Owain has trained really well with us and is a bright prospect for the future but it’s a big occasion and it would be a big ask”.

The Dragons have, however, been given an injury boost with flanker Ollie Griffiths available for selection after overcoming a shoulder injury suffered in Parma.
