CARDIFF Blues boss Danny Wilson is hoping for an “electric” atmosphere in the unfamiliar surroundings of Caerphilly when his side take on Newport Gwent Dragons in the Guinness PRO12 on Saturday, writes Chris Kirwan.

The Dragons have lost home advantage for their final game of the season (kick-off 5.15pm) because of a Rodney Parade fixture clash with Newport County, who host Notts County in a key League Two encounter.

After site visits to Ebbw Vale’s Eugene Cross Park and Cross Keys’ Pandy Park, the Dragons plumped for Constructaquote Stadium, formerly Virginia Park, which hosts a PRO12 game for the first since Ulster thrashed the Cheesemen 67-15 in 2002.

The ground is closer to the Arms Park than Rodney Parade and it’s unlikely that Wilson’s side will face as partisan a welcome in Caerphilly as they do in Newport.

However, the former Dragons forwards coach believes the home of the Green Army could still be boisterous.

“It’s a unique experience for both the Dragons and for Cardiff Blues,” said head coach Wilson. “Rodney Parade drums up quite an atmosphere and is a big advantage for the Dragons so it will be interesting to see how Caerphilly goes.

“It will be quite a tight ground if you get 6,000 in a ground like that the atmosphere will be great.

“Recently we played in front of 16,000 at the Kingspan Stadium [against Ulster] and there was a great atmosphere. It sounds strange but a 6,000 crowd in a small ground can have the same atmosphere.

“The Dragons have chosen that venue and I think the atmosphere could be electric. I hope people turn up from both the Blues and Dragons to fill the ground for the last game of the season.

“Hopefully the sun shines and we have two sides that want to throw the ball around and play some rugby.

“That’s our intention and watching the Dragons they have that same intent, so it could make for a good occasion to finish the season.”

Dragons season ticket holders must collect a paper ticket for the clash in Caerphilly. General admission tickets are available from the Rodney Parade ticket office or by calling 01633 674990. They start at £12 for adults, £9 for concessions and £3 for juniors.
