NEWPORT Gwent Dragons boss Kingsley Jones has urged Wales to give Hallam Amos a summer at home so he can fly into next season rather than flinging the speedster into a pair of tough summer Tests with Tonga and Samoa.

Interim Wales head coach Robin McBryde names his squad for the summer tour at midday on Tuesday and there are places up for grabs in the back three in the absence of Lions trio Leigh Halfpenny, Liam Williams and George North.

Amos started on the wing in all three Tests against the All Blacks last summer but has not played since injuring his shoulder attempting to score in the opening autumn Test against Australia in November.

The 22-year-old, who is on a national dual contract, has been close to a return for quite some time with the Welsh Rugby Union leading his rehabilitation.

Amos scored three tries in his six appearances before injury and the Dragons have sorely missed his game-breaking ability and finishing prowess.

However, he won’t feature in the final game of the season against Cardiff Blues in Caerphilly on Saturday, denying him the chance to prove his fitness and stake a claim for a place on the summer tour.

When asked if it would be a risk putting Amos back straight back into Test rugby after a solitary conditioning game with RGC 1404 on June 2 in Colwyn Bay, Jones said: “It’s a question for Robin and I am sure they would like him to go.

“Hallam has got a bit of experience [at international level] but it would be a big ask for anyone to not play a lot of rugby this season then go on a tough tour.

“They will be playing in tough matches against South Sea Islanders. The sensible thing would be to leave him behind but I’m not sure of their thinking.

“Is it good for him to go along and be a part of it? I am not sure they have got that luxury and they need to take players that can play, so I guess the best thing for Hallam is to have a good summer.”

Amos misses out against the Blues while there will be late fitness tests for Wales lock Cory Hill and full-back Carl Meyer after they suffered injuries in the 24-20 loss in Edinburgh last Friday.

Loosehead prop Thomas Davies has been ruled out but his absence is countered by the return of Sam Hobbs to face his former team while Sarel Pretorius is back in contention from a hamstring injury.

The Dragons will also be boosted by the return of Wales hopeful Tyler Morgan, leaving the management with a decision to make about who wears 12 on their back.

“Tyler is going to come back into the team,” said Jones. “Jack Dixon was excellent up in Edinburgh while Sam Beard gives us leadership, experience and has been in good form. It’s a tough one for who goes with Tyler.”

The Dragons are hoping to end a streak of 14 Guinness PRO12 derby losses on the spin against the Blues while they haven’t won in any competition since beating Enisei-STM on January 16.

They head into the clash on the back of a remarkable collapse in Edinburgh when they shipped three tries in the final eight minutes to lose a commanding 20-3 lead.

“To lose a game like that, the players were very emotional in the changing room and we have to take that feeling into the last game of the season.

“They don’t need much motivating for a derby and we look forward to a big game to end the season against a Blues side playing really well at the moment.

“They have some great players across the park and it’s a big challenge but we want to finish with a win.”
