DRAGONS boss Bernard Jackman believes Rhys Thomas has the qualities to become “an outstanding coach” after adding the former Wales hooker to his management team.

The 35-year-old has worked with academy age-grade sides in recent seasons along with his playing commitments, making 70 appearances for the Rodney Parade region after signing in 2013.

The 27-times capped hooker has not completely closed the door on his playing career just yet but Jackman has signed two new options for the 2 jersey in Gerard Ellis and Liam Belcher to compete with Rhys Buckley and Elliot Dee, while they also have Wales Under-20s prospects Ellis Shipp and Owen Hughes on the books.

Thomas helped in the development of the Dragons’ inexperienced squad while in the thick of the action and the new boss is thrilled the front rower will continue to be an influence in the region.

“I am delighted to be able to bring Thomas Rhys Thomas into our coaching team as I feel he has the attributes to make an outstanding coach,” said head coach Jackman.

“At the Dragons, we want to build a reputation for developing players and coaches and Rhys is the type of character who epitomises the values that are important to us in our group.”

The signing of Ellis and Belcher from London Irish and Cardiff Blues respectively ensures that former Ireland hooker Jackman will have four strong senior options to pick from.

“Both are young hookers who have lots of potential and who will compete with Rhys Buckley and Elliot Dee for the starting hooker position,” he said.

“Liam comes to us from the Cardiff Blues and has represented Wales at under-20s level, whilst Gerard came to my attention when he played for London Irish against Grenoble in the Challenge Cup and is a very explosive ball carrier.

“Both players have settled in quickly and I am looking forward to seeing them play in pre-season and staking their claim for a starting shirt.”
