CROSS Keys director of rugby Jonathan Westwood says there is plenty more to come from his team as they look to build on their morale-boosting win against Llanelli, writes Iwan Davies.

The Gwent outfit took a significant step towards getting their season back on track after recording a 44-34 bonus point victory last Friday night.

A high quality, thrilling contest in appalling conditions saw them edge out the West Walians to secure their first home league triumph.

Next up for the men from Pandy Park is a trip to Carmarthenshire to face tricky Llandovery, who are licking their wounds after a 23-10 home defeat to defending league champions Pontypridd.

After three excellent years, a period which saw them pick up silverware, Keys, the 2014 Principality Premiership runners-up and Swalec Cup finalists, have had a sluggish start to the season.

Westwood was pleased with Keys' win over Llanelli, although they were made to sweat for their triumph, the visitors fighting back from 34-13 to nearly sneak it at the end as they clawed the score back to 37-34 with just three minutes to go.

Westwood said: "It was an excellent advert for Premiership rugby with loads of good tries and it was 32 minutes before we had the first scrum.

"It was just great to get the win but you can see we aren't as confident as we were in recent seasons and we hope we can build on this.

"Angus O'Brien (outside half) was outstanding as were Tom Lampard (blindside flanker), Darren Hughes (hooker) and Scott Matthews (openside flanker)."

Newport Gwent Dragons No 10 O'Brien and Matthews were truly sublime, both only 20 years old, and it must only be a matter of time before the latter gets his chance at the region again after the 5ft 9in and 15st 6lb dynamo made three appearances for them last season.

Westwood, whose team are currently fifth in the 12-team table and one place above Llandovery, added: "But we know we are still a long way from where we want to be and we had been woeful of late.

"It was an excellent victory but there is plenty of room for improvement and we'll be looking to continue to rebuild our confidence against Llandovery.

"It a difficult place to go and we've got a tough one against Carmarthen Quins the week after, but that's how it is in this league.

"But we are confident we can turn things around. We are very fortunate we have a board at the club who are very supportive and understanding.

"We need to build on our confidence and play with greater consistency."
