AFTER toppling England twice and enjoying a double success on South African soil, Wales Deaf will be looking for future stars at a family fun day in Cwmbran on Sunday.

The Wales Deaf Rugby Union, in association with Torfaen Play Service, will be holding the event at Cwmbran Stadium, Henllys Way between midday and 3pm.

Entry is free and open to all ages and ability, deaf and hearing, with children getting the chance to showcase their skills.

"WDRU coaches will be scouting new players for the national team so if you love rugby, ever saw yourself as becoming a rugby player or just fancy a great day out with the kids this will be the place to be," said Sophia Cahill.

Cahill runs The Community Project, which was created by the WDRU committee in 2011 and is funded by Wales National Trust, the Barbarians and Specsavers.

It was set up in order to give inspiration to the young deaf community, encourage children to participate in sport and create WDRU academy for under-18s.

"We hold events across Wales during school times inviting the schools and deaf units to attend to take part in specially structured sessions," said Cahill.

"These sessions are mindful of common concerns such as gender, ability, cochlea implants and age. Our motto is 'No Barriers' which we show is possible during these events."

The Wales Deaf team that triumphed in South Africa in the summer also took the community scheme to local schools and participated in activities with deaf children.

"This was a wonderful life experience that opened all our eyes," said Cahill. "The excitement from the children was priceless.

"It makes you realise how lucky you are as many were under-privileged children, some with disabilities.

"For myself, and I'm sure I speak for all the boys too, this was an experience I will never forget.

"The perfectly structured training sessions prepared by our professional coaches soon changed and it was like free-for-all crazy fun-filled mayhem where literally everyone was rolling around in laughter.

"This is what the Community Project is all about – all children, regardless of deafness, gender or ability, getting involved in sport and simply having fun. No Barriers!"

Sunday's fun day will feature taster sessions held by our official WRU coaches, an inflatable pitch, arts and crafts, giant Jenga, giant dart board, gladiator inflatables, stalls and a raffle.
