OPPORTUNITY knocks at Pandy Park this evening when Cross Keys and Ebbw Vale kick off the new Foster's Challenge Cup, writes Chris Kirwan.

The competition has been established to fill the void for the 12 Principality Premiership clubs while the British and Irish Cup is played.

The teams have been split into three geographical groups – the Gwent quartet of Keys, Ebbw, Newport and Bedwas are in Pool C – with the winners and best runner-up progressing to semi-finals next year.

It promises to provide a chance for those who have been on the fringes to stake a claim for Premiership action and for clubs to have a look at younger talent.

Keys are currently on an eight-game unbeaten streak and backs coach Morgan Stoddart, who will be taking more of a lead while head coach Greg Woods helps with the Newport Gwent Dragons Premiership Select BIC team, has urged his charges to keep the momentum tonight (kick-off 7.15pm).

"Because we haven't got a massive squad a few of the older boys will still have to play but there will be a lot more youngsters and game time for those who haven't played much," said the former Wales full-back.

"It's about getting the balance right because we want to win but give some young boys experience at the same time.

"We've gone on a good run and are eight unbeaten so are looking to keep building towards the (Premiership) games with Neath and Llandovery. If players impress against Ebbw Vale and Bedwas they could earn a spot."

Ebbw are adopting a similar approach, casting an eye over the next generation while giving the chance for squad members to force their way in for the league encounters with Aberavon and Bridgend.

"We're really excited because we've worked with clubs in our surrounding area to get some players in as well as some college boys," said backs coach Nick Wakley.

"There will be those who have been on the fringes who will want to impress and put their hand up for selection, so it's a chance to widen our player pool."

Entry is free for Keys season ticket holders and under-16s and £5 for everyone else.

Newport and Bedwas meet at Rodney Parade on Saturday.
