A REMARKABLE late rally by Newport put a real gloss on the outcome of this one-sided encounter as they ran in four tries in the last 14 minutes to claim what had seemed such a highly improbable bonus point such a short time before.

It also took the shine of what had been a polished performance up until then by an impressive Bedwas who had led 42-2 with just under quarter of an hour to go.

Steve Law’s men had dominated almost the entire game but lost their way spectacularly after such an imperious display up until then when emptying their bench.

The Bridge Field side had humiliated the Black and Ambers in the Premiership Challenge Cup 46-0 seven days before and looked on their way to do a similar demolition job, albeit with multiple personnel changes being made by both sides.

The home side obliterated Newport in the scrum for at least half of the game and scored two tries off their mighty set piece in the first half.

It was actually the visitors who started better and they took the lead after a few minutes when their outside half Julian Mogg slotted over a penalty.

They laid siege to the Bedwas try-line, but the Black and Ambers couldn’t add to their 2-0 advantage after some stout defending by the hosts.

After clearing their lines, it was their turn to put the visitors under the pump.

Newport conceded a penalty, which was slotted over by the hosts’ full back James Dixon.

A powerful burst by Bedwas blindside Andrew Waite from a lineout soon gave the home side great field position Off the base of a powerful scrum five going forward, scrum half Luke Crane did well to dive over for the opening try, Dixon converting for a 10-2 lead.

Minutes later, a lovely chip and chase by wing Rory Budina saw the Black and Ambers carry over their own try-line to concede another scrum five.

With Newport under immense pressure in the set piece again, referee Gwyn Morris had no hesitation in awarding the Bridge Field side a penalty try.

It was 18-2 after half an hour and all too easy for Bedwas.

They soon scored try number three after wing Matthew John bagged a superb individual try, tearing through the hapless Black and Ambers defence, Dixon again converting.

Things got worse for the city side when their full back Llywarch ap Myrddin was yellow carded for taking out fly half Richard Powell in the air, just before the interval.

In fairness to Newport, they nearly hit back before half-time with a try under the sticks, but Mr Morris pulled them back for a forward pass.

They had some opportunities early in the second half, running a penalty in front of the posts before they were turned over, while wing Wes Cunliffe was a handful and set off on one strong run.

It was Bedwas who scored first after the interval when the deadly Dixon struck again with another penalty.

Newport were down to 14 men again after their number eight Brendan Lampitt was sin binned for illegally holding up a dangerous Bedwas counter attack.

Wing John got his second and the home side’s four-try bonus point when he ran in a converted interception try from deep inside his own half.

The impressive flanker Waite romped home to claim try number five after 56 minutes, Dixon this time missing the conversion.

Just when you expected Bedwas to run riot, Newport hit back, It was Bedwas’ turn to be down to 14 men when replacement prop Joe Mills was yellow carded for a high tackle on wing Elliott Frewen, This spurred Newport and they rallied superbly, never giving in and scored those four late tries.

Replacement fly half Matt O’Brien made a big impression when he came on and landed two tries and a conversion while tireless flanker Rhys Jenkins and the capable Cunliffe got the other two touchdowns.

Things may not be going well so far in 2016 for Newport but they showed plenty of guts at the end of this to at least to give the score some much-needed respectability and gain a point.
