CROSS Keys coach Greg Woods remembers all too clearly the heartache he and his players felt when losing to Pontypridd in the semi-finals of last season’s Swalec Cup.

Twelve months on and Woods wants to lay to rest the ghosts of that 33-27 defeat when Keys face Carmarthen Quins at the same stage of the competition tomorrow (2.30pm).

Aberavon’s Talbot Athletic Ground hosts the last-four clash between Woods’ charges and the West Wales outfit, who have already been beaten twice by the Gwent side this term.

Keys, cup winners in 2012 and runners-up in 2014, are playing their fourth semi-final in five years and would dearly love a crack at either Pontypridd or Llandovery at the Principality Stadium on May 1.

“This is massive,” said head coach Woods, whose team have seen off Bridgend and Neath on their way to the semis. “You want to be involved in big cup games like this.

“It’s one of the biggest games of the year and just a great event for the club and the village.

“We lost at this stage last year in an epic semi-final so we need to be on the right side of the scoreboard this time.

“Last year’s semi-final was one of the best games I’ve been involved in but we don’t want the same outcome this time.

“We’ve won semi-finals before and they are great for the club. This is the fourth semi-final in the last five years for this management team and if successful it will be our third final.

“That would be a great achievement.”

On Keys’ opponents and what his side must do to come out on top, Woods added: “Quins are going to be very strong and the league results don’t matter in a game like this.

“They also failed at this stage last season so there are probably very similar conversations being had by them.

“We haven’t spoken much about them if I’m honest, we’ve got to concentrate on what we do well.

“We’ve got to make sure we play our own game and do everything accurately.

“Everyone wants to play and all the boys have put their hands up over the last two games.

“We will pick the right 23 and then they’ve got to make sure they are switched on from the off.”

Prop Leon Brown is set to feature for Keys while skipper Leon Andrews, back from injury against Newport last time out, will be in contention for a starting place.

Pontypridd face Llandovery at St Helen’s in Swansea in tomorrow’s other semi-final.
