NEWPORT believe they have signed a potent attacking weapon by securing the services of Wales students centre Chay Smith.

The 20-year-old heads to Rodney Parade from Cardiff Met and formerly played age-grade rugby for the Ospreys and Bristol while he was studying at Filton College.

Head coach Craig Warlow believes Smith will flourish in the Principality Premiership for the Black and Ambers.

The former fly-half said: "Having spent the last two years with Cardiff Met he will bring pace and enthusiasm to an already exciting backline.

"Chay possesses the speed and awareness to make telling breaks and put people into space. His unselfish play will complement our talented back three players and our squad as a whole.

"With the right environment and lots of hard work, it will be exciting to watch Chay develop."

Newport hold their annual awards ceremony in the Bisley Suite at Rodney Parade on Friday, June 17.

Tickets for the event, which starts at 7pm, cost £25 and include a two-course meal while the evening will consist of speeches, presentations and video highlights from a memorable campaign in which the Black and Ambers went from bottom of the pile to challenging for the play-offs.
