BEDWAS will attempt to become the first side to throw a spanner in the works of Merthyr's Principality Premiership charge at the Wern tomorrow, writes Chris Kirwan.

The big-spending Ironmen have made an impressive start to life in the top flight and their mouth-watering clash at Pontypridd is on the horizon.

But first the men from Bridge Field will bid to succeed where Cross Keys and Cardiff failed by denying the new boys – and title favourites – victory.

Bedwas head into the clash on the back of a narrow defeat to Ponty and a well-deserved 20-12 success against Newport at Rodney Parade.

"It's always good to get a win because pressure mounts if you don't get any good results at the start of the season," said head coach Steve Law.

"It makes life a little bit easier and happier in training ahead of a challenge that we are looking forward to in Merthyr.

"It's going to be tough against a side with their personnel and their budget but we are pretty happy with the start we have made.

"Both Ponty and Newport were up at the top of the league last season and we could've pipped Ponty while we took the points at Rodney Parade, where lots of teams will find it tough.

"Now it's a case of fine-tuning because we created enough opportunities against Newport but have to make sure we put more of them to bed at Merthyr."

Bargoed are getting to grips with life in the Premiership but lock horns with familiar foes when they host Swansea this weekend.

The teams were rivals in the Championship in the last two seasons with Bargoed enjoying home wins when winning the title in 2015 and also when joining the All Whites on the way up to the top flight last term.

April's 24-11 success proved to be crucial for Steve Barber's side in securing one of the four promotion spots with tries coming from lock Grant Rogers, wing Ashley Norton and prop Kieron Brown.

After being edged out by Neath on opening weekend Bargoed were given a torrid time when beaten 48-7 by Llandovery at Church Bank, although they aren't the first team to suffer such a fate.

They will be looking for a reaction against a Swansea side who have suffered home losses to Carmarthen Quins and Aberavon.
