CAPTAIN Sam Warburton believes Wales got out of jail to secure their last-gasp 33-30 victory over Japan at the Principality Stadium.

The hosts had Sam Davies to thank for sparing their blushes after the replacement kicked the drop goal with just five seconds left on the clock to earn their first win of this year's Autumn internationals.

Despite Wales controlling majority of the match and never falling behind, the visitors managed to pull level through Amanaki Lotoahea's converted try with five minutes remaining to set up a tense finish to the match.

But Davies split the posts with a calm kick to take the spoils and his captain was delighted with the composure that the 23-year-old showed.

Warburton told BBC Two: "Fair play to Sam for stepping up at the end. It takes a lot of guts to do that especially on his second cap and he was in a heck of amount of pressure to slot that.

"It was a get out of jail free card really, whenever we built a score we let them straight back in which was disappointing. Every time we managed to get a bit of momentum we went two steps back.

"It's disappointing to give away the tries that we did, it's just errors. When we get the ball, just keep it. We had a few mistakes there and Japan fed off it.

"But I mean credit to Japan, you can tell they are well conditioned and a well-drilled team, they just kept coming - it was an extremely tough Test match.

"We definitely didn't underestimate them, this week we had one of the best training weeks and we picked a really strong team because we knew there was a tough challenge coming. Credit to Japan, I thought they played extremely well today."

mfl Man of the match Amanaki Mafi believes his Japan side can continue to improve and compete with the top-ranked sides in international Test rugby.

He told BBC Two: "It's not the result we wanted but we played until the 80th minute and I am really proud of the boys.

"We came here to challenge. Wales are a tough team - we like to challenge the best in the world regularly so we are looking forward to Fiji next week."
