PONTYPOOL’S Ethan Davies was the star as Wales sealed a quarter-final clash with Australia at the Dubai 7s after beating Argentina and Canada on day one.

Brynmawr’s Team GB Olympic silver medallist Sam Cross is representing Wales and he’s joined by Pontypool pair and former Abersychan Secondary School head boys Davies and Jared Rosser.

And Davies, who plays his club rugby for Cross Keys as a full-back or fly-half, enjoyed a superb day’s work.

He opened the scoring with a try after three minutes and kicked three conversions in the 21-19 win over Argentina.

And Dragons academy wing Rosser, who has been playing in the Premiership with Ebbw Vale, also raced in for a debut try.

Davies then converted an Owen Jenkins score and also added another try of his own but Wales went down 24-12 to Olympic champions Fiji.

And he then crossed for another two tries as Canada were beaten 31-5 in the third match after a sin-binning to key player John Moonlight.

Wales take on Pool D winners Australia at 7.44am GMT tomorrow.
