RHYS Webb was convinced Wales deserved to beat old enemies England on Saturday, but their failure to do so boiled down to mistakes late in the game.

Wales led going into the final five minutes in Cardiff and looked set to end their opponents’ 15-match winning streak.

But a couple of basic errors, including in the build-up to Elliot Daly’s all-important last-ditch try, put paid to another famous victory over the Red Rose.

“We were there for 67-68 minutes, and the last 10 minutes, maybe we lost our composure,” said scrum-half Webb after the 21-16 defeat.

“Aspects of the game didn’t go our way when we needed them to. We know that we need to play for the full 80 minutes. We’ve talked about this before.

“We played some great rugby at times, but it was basic errors that crept in in that last 10-12 minutes.

“The lineout didn’t go our way, there were penalties and exits, kicking straight down their neck instead of going off the pitch after being under the pump a little bit. We can’t afford to switch off.”

He added: “I thought the boys did superbly. It is difficult to take as a loss. I don’t think we deserved that result.

“If we are going to beat a team like England, who are doing well on a good run with that winning habit, we need to be focused and stay calm for the full 80 minutes, and we didn’t.

“We had a good feeling in camp all week, and for 65-68 minutes we played some great stuff. It was very quiet in the changing room. We know we played well, but we let the win go.”

Giving his view on the wayward kick by Jonathan Davies that led to England’s winning try, he said: “We had been under the pump a little bit, we had defended well all game.

“The kick was good, but the chase was poor, which goes back to switching off in those last 10-12 minutes. We know we can’t afford to do that.”
