EBBW Vale were made to work hard to secure victory over Bedwas in their penultimate home match of the season, writes Jay Bayford.

The glorious sunshine saw plenty of fans flock to Eugene Cross Park where Lewis Dennett and Steffan Jones traded penalties in the opening 10 minutes.

Dennett missed another penalty on 12 minutes before both sides wasted golden opportunities.

Bedwas fly-half Joseph Scrivens used his pace and trickery to glide past a number of Ebbw players before being taken down.

The ball was then worked to Jones and he almost bundled the ball over the line but Ebbw won the ball back and Stef Thomas launched the counter attack.

He was stopped just shy of the halfway line but he managed to offload to opposite winger Toby Fricker who then darted to the try line. However, with three covering defenders, Fricker was caught.

The momentum stayed with the Steelmen as Ebbw won another penalty, which was again missed by Dennett.

But minutes later, space opened up for Lewis Young to go over with Dennett converting.

The visitors hit back after great work from Jones and James Richards set up Scrivens to go over but the hosts had the last word of the half with a Dennett penalty.

The fly half was off target again in the second half and his miss was made worse due to an accurate kick from Jones as Bedwas closed the deficit to two points.

Jones went one better two minutes later as he raced through to touch down and put the Wass in front. He also added the conversion.

Dennett saw yellow on 61 minutes and in his absence Dan Haymond booted two penalties to edge Ebbw back ahead.

There was a late scare in the final minute as Jones stood over the ball for a penalty but he blasted wide to hand Ebbw the victory.
