THE Football Association of Wales (FAW) has confirmed that the 2014 UEFA Super Cup final in Cardiff is on course for a sell-out.

The match, which will be played at Cardiff City Stadium on August 12 between Real Madrid and Sevilla, will see the homecoming of Wales star Gareth Bale for European champions Madrid.

The three week window where fans from across the world were able to register for tickets on the UEFA website closed on Friday.

By far the strongest demand for tickets has come from within Wales, followed by Spain and England.

In total fans from 69 different countries applied for tickets from as far afield as Brazil, the United States, Kuwait, China and Sri Lanka.

The game is now on track to deliver UEFA the largest ever crowd for a modern day Super Cup, which pits the winners of the Champions League against the Europa League champions.

Jonathan Ford, chief executive of the FAW said: “I’m delighted that the UEFA Super Cup 2014 is expected to sell out and I’m particularly pleased that the Welsh public has shown such an incredible appetite for tickets.

“Over half of all public ticket applications via uefa.com were from Wales and this sends a clear message to UEFA that our local market can more than support a major event like the Super Cup.

“Such has been the demand for tickets that the match is now on track to deliver UEFA its largest ever crowd for a modern day Super Cup.”

The news will be seen as a boost for Wales’ bid to be a host city for the Euro 2020 championships.

“It is going to be a special occasion and with fans from 69 countries descending on Cardiff on August 12,” added Ford.

“Wales can show the footballing world our warm hospitality and just how well we put on major events.”

Successful UEFA Super Cup ticket applicants will receive a confirmation e-mail of their order by no later than July 7.

Applicants can also check the status of their application by logging into their UEFA ticket account.

Tickets, which will include the applicant’s name, will be despatched by secure post before the end of July.
