NEWPORT’S Ellis Harrison is still on cloud nine after his Wembley goal helped Bristol Rovers bounce back to the Football League at the first attempt.

The 21-year-old from Pill described Sunday’s Conference play-off final as the biggest day of his career.

And Harrison delivered on the big stage, putting the Pirates back on level terms after 29 minutes with his 14th goal of the season following Lenell John-Lewis’ second-minute opener for Grimsby.

The Wales under-21s forward was forced off with cramp after 80 minutes and had to watch from the sidelines as Rovers’ Lee Mansell held his nerve to stroke home the decisive penalty to win a nail-biting shootout.

It means Darrell Clarke’s men are back in League Two just 12 months after they were relegated and Harrison can look forward to two more derbies with his hometown club Newport County AFC next season.

“It was the biggest day of my career and I was delighted to win,” said Harrison.

“Penalties is not ideal for either team but a win is a win.

“It’s not good to come off with cramp but it’s a big pitch and it was a hot day so it drained me but I was confident in the lads.”

Harrison says he doesn’t remember too much about his goal as he was too busy celebrating with his teammates and the near 30,000 Rovers fans packed into Wembley.

“It just landed at my feet and I just struck it,” he said. “I don’t know where it went; I just turned round and was too busy celebrating.

“The fans have been brilliant all season and to take 30,000 to Wembley is unbelievable,” he added.

“They help you so much; they’re like the 12th man and they were amazing.”

Harrison looks set to stay with Rovers for at least another year after helping them seal promotion.

“I’ve got another year on my contract at Rovers and I’m very happy to stay,” he told the Argus last month.

“It’s a big club and we deserve to be back in the Football League.”

Former County stars Christian Jolley, who was an unused substitute at Wembley, and Paul Bignot, who was not in the match day squad, have been released by Grimsby following their defeat.
