MIDFIELDER David Edwards says the Wales footballers have been inspired by the exploits of the nation’s rugby stars ahead of what could be a big weekend of celebration for Welsh sport, writes Andrew Penman.

Edwards and teammates take on Bosnia-Herzegovina on Saturday evening needing just one point to seal qualification for Euro 2016.

Just hours before Chris Coleman’s men kick-off in Zenica, Sam Warburton and Co go head to head with Australia at Twickenham to decide who tops Pool A in the Rugby World Cup.

And Edwards says the success of Warren Gatland’s men in qualifying for the quarter-finals ahead of hosts England has inspired everyone.

“We take a massive amount of inspiration from the rugby,” said the Wolverhampton Wanderers star.

“They have done brilliantly in adversity, with all the injuries they suffered. They dug deep and beat England at Twickenham and it makes you very proud.

“Hopefully Wales can have a very successful weekend. We’ll all be rooting for them and we hope it can be a big celebration.

“It could be something very special for the nation and to be involved in that is something I’m immensely proud of.”

Edwards is happy to be back ahead of schedule after a recent knee injury and he’s relishing the chance to be a part of history as Wales look to qualify for a major tournament for the first time since 1958.

“I’m delighted to be here,” he said. “I picked up an injury against Brighton a few weeks ago, I got a kick on the knee and initially I thought I would be out for a month.

“But we gave it a week of ice and recovery and it felt a lot better last week.

“I worked really hard, played 15 minutes for Wolves and trained this week as well.

“I’m delighted to be available for these two games.”

Edwards is expecting a tough test in Bosnia before Tuesday’s final group game at home to minnows Andorra.

“These places are really tough places to go to,” he added. “I’m sure it will be a full blooded performance from Bosnia.

“It’s all or nothing for them because they need to win.

“We’ve got to withstand that and use our counter-attacking ability to get the result we need.”
