OSPREYS fly-half Sam Davies was named as young player of the season at a Connacht-dominated Guinness Pro12 awards night.

The former Wales Under-20s international pipped Leinster's Garry Ringrose and Josh van der Flier to the honour, following in the footsteps of Newport Gwent Dragons number eight Taulupe Faletau.

"It's a great honour to win the young-player award," said Davies, who vies with Wales fly-half Dan Biggar for the Ospreys 10 jersey.

"When you think of all the outstanding players coming through in the Pro12, it makes you feel proud to have been chosen.

"But I would not have won it without the help of the boys at the Ospreys. I'm really pleased to be recognised for my efforts but it's about the side as much as individuals and it's brilliant to be included in the dream team.

"It's been a tough season for us as a region, but we will learn from the experience and be back stronger than ever next term."

Davies was the sole Welsh representative in the Pro12 dream team with the men from Galway dominating the awards after a stunning season in which they finished second in the table to earn a home play-off semi-final against Glasgow.

Connacht centre Bundee Aki won the players' player of the season – voted for by all 12 captains and vice-captains – ahead of Stuart Hogg of Glasgow and CJ Stander of Munster.

The Galway province's boss Pat Lam was named as coach of the season while captain John Muldoon, who is celebrating his thirteenth professional season at Connacht, was presented the prestigious chairman's award by Welsh icon Gerald Davies.
