RHYS Patchell is a surprise inclusion for Wales at full-back in the second Test against New Zealand in Wellington on Saturday (kick-off 8.35am) while Luke Charteris is recalled at lock.

Scarlets-bound Patchell comes in for the injured George North with Liam Williams shifting to wing while former Newport Gwent Dragons captain Charteris gets the nod ahead of Bradley Davies.

Patchell has left Cardiff Blues for Llanelli in search of regular rugby at fly-half but will wear 15 on his back when adding to the two caps he won on the 2013 tour to Japan.

A classy footballer, the 23-year-old is another kicking option and should add threat when coming in as another first receiver.

He is preferred to wings Tom James or Eli Walker and Gareth Anscombe, who played 15 against South Africa in the World Cup quarter-final and replaced Williams last weekend only to suffer a minor injury.

Patchell initially missed the cut for New Zealand but, after training with the squad before they flew Down Under, received a call-up after the first Test because of North's hamstring injury and Anscombe's blow.

He landed on Monday and featured off the bench in Tuesday's embarassing 40-7 defeat to the Chiefs.

Dragons wing Hallam Amos completes the back three to win his ninth cap in Wellington, the 21-year-old getting another opportunity after a mixed performance in the 39-21 loss at Eden Park in which he had some bright moments in attack but some iffy ones in defence.

Charteris gets the nod after captaining the midweek side in the humiliating  defeat to the Chiefs and while he didn’t hit the heights in Hamilton, the lock is a player that Gatland knows he can rely on and was a touch unfortunate to miss out to Ospreys-bound Davies in the first Test.

Wales produced an excellent performance for an hour in Auckland before tiring to concede the lead and three tries in the final quarter.

“It is important we go out on Saturday with the confidence to play for 80 minutes in what will be another huge test match,” said head coach Warren Gatland.

“We kept the ball and played well for periods of the first test and we need to convert that to the full 80.

“It will be another huge occasion, in a packed out stadium in Wellington and we are determined to build on our first test performance.”
