FORMER Newport Gwent Dragons full-back Phil Dollman has been ruled out of Wales’ summer tour by a “significant” knee injury along while Scarlets tighthead Samson Lee has also been forced to pull out.

Dollman, 32, suffered the blow in a try-scoring display for Exeter in their Aviva Premiership title triumph at Twickenham last month.

It came just days after he had been named as an injury replacement for Cardiff Blues prospect Rhun Williamson the tour to face Tonga and Samoa.

Dollman got his unexpected opportunity in the absence of Lions Leigh Halfpenny and Liam Williams plus injured Newport Gwent Dragons full-back/wing Hallam Amos but his chances of a cap have cruelly been dashed.

“The last I heard he was awaiting consultation following a significant injury to his knee,” said head coach Robin McBryde, who is holding the reins while Warren Gatland and Rob Howley are on Lions duty.

“The timing it occurred and the manner that it happened, it was a very bittersweet day for Phil having spoken to him on the phone.

“The heights of winning, being successful and scoring a try and then the injury. It’s tough.”

Rhys Patchell has been added to the squad with Cardiff Blues’ Gareth Anscombe most likely to start at 15 in the Test against Tonga a week on Friday after impressing in the conditioning match against RGC 1404 in Colwyn Bay last Friday.

“I thought Gareth played exceptionally well both as a 15 and at 10 and is coming on with a bit of form with Cardiff Blues,” said McBryde.

“We haven’t got anybody who is an out-and-out full-back, Rhys Patchell spent some time there and was good for us against the All Blacks last summer while Steff Evans can play there as well. There is good versatility among the back line.”

Lee, 24, also suffered an injury when winning a title after being forced off in the Scarlets’ Guinness PRO12 success against Munster in Dublin.

“Samson’s knee flared up in the game against Munster and hasn’t settled down enough for us to take him to the next level of training,” said McBryde.

“Unfortunately he has ruled out and Rhodri Jones will take his place in the squad.”

Exeter's Tomas Francis is likely to start at tighthead with Cardiff Blues' Dillon Lewis rivaling Jones to be his back-up.

Wales face Tonga in Auckland a week on Friday and then face Samoa in Apia seven days later.
