Belgium coach Marc Wilmots believes Wales are only going to get so far unless they find a more attacking approach, writes Michael Pearlman.
The Red Dragons are the fourth ranked side in world football with a host of star studded names, but despite a cauldron of atmosphere at the King Baudouin Stadium, they couldn’t break the stubborn Welsh resistance.
However, despite earning a point that keeps Wales above Belgium, Wilmots believes it is Chris Coleman’s side who have the most improving to do.
“In my opinion Belgium deserved to win the match. We pressed them into their third of the pitch for most of the game and their keeper saved them a few times,” he said.
“Wales were well organised, as we knew they would be.
“I expected a Welsh team that would defend deep and hope Bale would profit from our errors, but we gave them very few chances.
“I’m not surprised by Wales, they have some very good players and defend deep and play on the counter-attack.”
Wilmots feels that Wales’ current approach isn’t going to be enough for them to progress to Belgium’s level.
“If Wales are going to reach Belgium’s level they are going to have to be more proactive, which is a lot more difficult.
“That’s the next step for Wales.”
