WARREN Gatland admitted to feeling ‘flat’ after Wales’ Grand Slam and Triple Crown hopes were dashed by a Six Nations draw in Dublin.

Wales showed resilience to fight back from 13-0 down at the Aviva Stadium but Ireland earned a share of the spoils thanks to Jonathan Sexton’s penalty with six minutes left.

Scotland, who lost to England at Murrayfield, are next up at Principality Stadium on Saturday and the head coach has demanded an improvement from his side after they produced another unconvincing performance with ball in hand.

“I’m not satisfied at all, I feel flat at the moment,” said Gatland, who faces an anxious wait to learn the extent of the damage to star fly-half Dan Biggar’s injured left ankle.

“I was disappointed with how we started but good sides get themselves back into games, we did that and possibly should have come away with the win.

“We showed some character and both teams tried to play some rugby. We’ve got a couple of home games to focus on but it’s disappointing that after the first game we have taken a couple of trophies out of the cabinet already.

“It’s not a loss but we can’t win the Triple Crown and we can’t win a Grand Slam. Now the whole focus is just about making sure we’ve got a chance of winning the championship.”

Wales have a swift turnaround for the clash with the Scots, whose last win in Cardiff was in 2002, but captain Sam Warburton believes they will be buoyed by showing spirit in the face of a rapid Irish start.

“It was similar to two years ago when Ireland came out very well,” said the flanker. “The positive is that back then they ran away with the game and it was one of the worst international performances I have been involved in.

“If we were in a situation with three away games we’d be a lot more worried after drawing our first game but we’ve got three home games out of four and they are must-win matches now.

“Ireland are always one of the toughest international sides and it’s one of the most difficult games. At least we got something from the match, it’s much better than jumping on that plane with nothing.”
