THE Welsh players say they have no regrets over the leaked video clip of them celebrating England’s Euro 2016 defeat to Iceland.

A short clip emerged on social media last night showing several members of the Wales squad and staff reacting joyously as England’s exit at the hands of the minnows was confirmed.

But Newport’s Chris Gunter and Swansea City defender Neil Taylor suggested that they were merely supporting underdogs Iceland.

Gunter said: “I think it may be easy to see it as being slightly over the top. But it certainly wasn't meant to be that way.

“If you asked the squad as a whole from a selfish point of view we are ever so proud to be the last home nation team in the tournament.

“We've come such a long way and football has a funny way of bringing out emotions as you've seen when we played them a couple of weeks ago.

“But it wasn't certainly meant to come across that way.

“No-one's talked about Iceland,” he added. “They are another team who were written off before a ball was kicked and now they've reached the quarter-finals. “It’s fantastic for the tournament that Iceland are still in there.”

Taylor said he was delighted for his Swans teammate Gylfi Sigurdsson.

“As a squad we follow the underdogs in this tournament from Albania to Hungary,” he said. “It is a breath of fresh air.

“Iceland were written off as well, I know Gylfi and he has explained to me about Iceland what they are all about.

“We saw that when they qualified and in this tournament they have been unbelievable.

“That was half of the celebrations because of how well Iceland have done.

“I understand how it has come across. As a group of players we've supported Iceland all along.”

Asked about the fitness of captain Ashley Williams, who trained this morning following a shoulder problem, Taylor said: “Ash is Ash, I’ve played with him for years. He’ll be able to play. He won't want to miss a game.

“He’s been in pain since the game but there’s lots of ways for the medics to get you back than maybe in the olden days.

“He's had 24-hour treatment on it and he’s feeling OK.

“It’s a big boost how he was looking in the game on Saturday to be ready for the game on Friday. It’s massive for us.”

And Gunter added: "If you and try and keep Ashley off the pitch for a quarter-final then you're a braver man than me and Tayls."

Gunter was again asked about potentially missing his brother’s wedding on July 7.

He said: “Marc took off at midday today. He’s currently flying to Mexico so he’ll miss the game on Friday.

“My parents have said if we win and go through to the semi-final they’ll miss the wedding as well, which my brother’s fine with.

“I think my mother’s a little bit upset but if Wales are in the semi-final I don’t think you’ll be able to keep them away.”

And Taylor (above) revealed that he too has had to cancel plans for this week.

He said: “We always expected to go as far as we can and, it’s not as bad as Gunts, but I had Beyonce tickets this week and Lionel Richie was in Swansea a few weeks ago.

“I got them for my wife for her birthday and I didn’t even see the date [of the concert] at the time. I thought I had her birthday covered!”
