JAMIE Roberts insists there is no talk of a crisis in the Wales camp after a below-par RBS 6 Nations but insists much work is needed to right recent wrongs, writes Charlie Bennett.

Wales finished fifth in the table, the first time they have been below fourth since 2007, with just two wins against Italy and Ireland to their name.

However, it could have been very different for Rob Howley's men had they held on to leads against eventual Championship winners England and in the finale against France, losing narrowly at the death both times.

Still, centre Roberts, who has won 91 caps, says there are no excuses and knows much has to be done before they can recapture their former glories, which saw them last win the title in 2013.

"We are a confident group. At this level you have to be, but we are an honest group too. We are brutally honest with each other, the coaches are honest with each other," he said at the launch of the Crabbie's National Rugby Awards, which will take place at Twickenham on August 30.

"Rugby at Test level is more often than not won in the last ten minutes, I have played in many games where we have won late on – I remember the game here at Twickenham vividly in 2015 when we were dead and buried and came back to win.

"You have to focus and stay on point for 80 minutes and we did not do it against England, and when you are playing a side as good as that and as confident as that you will lose the game. It's as simple as that.

"Only against Ireland in Cardiff did we do that, and we had some decisions swing our way. We could easily have lost that game if the try from the driving maul was given.

"Those key moments in games come late on but unfortunately a few of them went against them, and as a side we need to highlight that and work on it.

"There is no secret, turning defeats into victories is hard work."

Now in its third year, the Crabbie's National Rugby Awards are designed to honour the achievements of all the thousands of rugby clubs up and down the country.

The Awards provide recognition to clubs and players at every level of the game, as well as those who invest their time and energy into the sport in other ways.

And Roberts, speaking at the event, believes winning away from home on the international stage has been noticeably harder this season, with just four successes away from home, three of which were against bottom side Italy.

"The RBS 6 Nations was highly competitive, I think only four games were won away from home, so home advantage has played a huge part," he said.

"From a Welsh viewpoint, we were bitterly disappointed to finish fifth. We did not play to our potential for 80 minutes – or 100 minutes looking at the France game – and it is probably the worst we have finished for a long time.

"We work and continue to work very hard at our own game, and when we fall short it is frustrating. Congratulations to England for winning it, they have been the most consistent side in the championship.

"It has been a hugely exciting tournament. For the players it was a chance to stake their claim for the summer."
