PROPERTY HISTORY

William Mathews Williams and his wife Rose Emily, both school teachers, bought 9 Old Village Road for their young family when it was built in 1908. WM (as he was known) taught at Romilly School and was an accomplished musician and the conductor of the Romilly Boys' Choir, which achieved considerable fame. He also taught music from the front room of the house, often accompanied by eldest daughter Grace on the grand piano. Theirs was a musical family: Grace was a gifted violinist and she, and her brother Glyn (a gifted cellist), played in a piano trio with their father. The family were joined by baby Marian in 1919 (the mother of the current owner). Grace Williams is generally regarded as Wales's most notable female composer. She lived in the house again from 1945 until her death in 1977 and is acknowledged by the plaque above the front door. One of her most popular works, Sea Sketches (1944) is dedicated to her parents for their good sense in setting up home on the coast of Glamorgan.'
