Stratton's War, by Laura Wilson (Orion, £7.99).

LIKE that other fictional policeman Foyle, DI Ted Stratton has to investigate serious crimes against the backdrop of the Second World War.

And, like his counterpart, DI Stratton is a decent copper who does not think people should get away with murder just because of the war.

Unfortunately, he is not always allowed to do the job the way it should be done.

DI Stratton is based in London and his investigation into the death of a former movie star soon embroils him in the criminal underworld.

If this is not enough, he also crosses path with M15 and discovers that his young nephew is involved.

The author promises this is the first of a series featuring DI Stratton and I will be looking forward to more of this promising new addition to the genre.
