FOR the first time in the Great British Bake Off tent it was spice week, and competition was fierce as two contestants left the show.

Because one of the contestants was sick last week nobody left the show, so the bottom two who didn’t spice things up were out this week.

First up was this week’s Signature Challenge where contestants had to make a ginger cake.

Jon Jenkins from Newport, who was wearing another bright Hawaiian shirt, made a cake with gingerbread people on it and even had time to stop for a tea break during baking.

Jon's was a little claggy but Prue Leith said it had a good flavour.

In the Technical Challenge Paul Hollywood requested two batches of six maamoul. None of the bakers had ever heard of it before, but they are a Middle Eastern pastry that is usually eaten at the end of Ramadan.

It was a challenge that had mixed results, and Jon’s were described as having ‘too much flavour’. He came seventh.

Last challenge in the show was the Showstopper. Prue wasn't feeling well and didn't make it into the tent so Paul was left to judge the bakers creations.

South Wales Argus:

Jon made a birthday chandelier designed to celebrate his daughter’s 21st birthday with raspberry and chilli jam.

Paul said it was messy but he loved the flavour. However it was enough to save him and Karen and Terry's left the competition.

The Great British Bake Off continues on Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4.
