IT’S that time of year again - the city marathon is back with a bang.

On Sunday the ABP Newport Wales Marathon & 10K will return to the city, promising to be another unforgettable day of distance running.

The marathon, 10K and family mile races are set to kick off from 9am – with activity and entertainment focused around the event village by the University of South Wales on Usk Way.

To facilitate the safe passage of participants, it will be necessary to implement road closures along the route.

Residents and businesses along the route should have been written to already with full details.

The eastern end of Usk Way in Newport city centre is the centre of the action will be closed from 3am to 7pm.

South Wales Argus:

On the western end of Usk Way, road closures start from 7am, with runners expecting to pass at 9am. This end will open up again to cars at 4.15pm.

The A48 on the western side of the Riverk Usk will be closed from 7am to 11am, with eastbound access only between those times.

Heading east from the city centre, Nash Road will be closed from 8.40 am to 11am, and Broad Street Common will be off limits to traffic between 9am and 1.30pm.

The route into Magor, following Parish Reen, North Row and Bareland Street will be closed between 9am and 1.30pm.

South Wales Argus:

The marathon route circles back onto Parish Reen via South Row before heading down Whitson Common Road - which will be closed from 9am to 2pm.

Goldcliff Road will stay closed until 2.30pm, with runners heading back across the River Usk via Broad Street Common, Nash Road, Traston Road and Corporation Road, with a detour to look at the Transporter Bridge on Stephenson Street.

The above named roads will be closed from 8.40am to 3.45pm, though some will start to open as the last runners pass through.

There are designated water stops along the whole route, and a huge amount of great viewing points.

South Wales Argus:

Favourites from last year include the footbridge over the A48 near the turning onto Nash Road and in the village of Magor - which saw the best atmosphere of the whole race last year.

Drivers and spectators should take care on the roads, and to leave their cars parked responsibly throughout the race.

There are detailed closure maps on the Newport Marathon website.
