Ryan Giggs not surprised by interest in Newport County boss Michael Flynn

Giggs took time out from a Wales training camp in Portugal to watch the final and he was disappointed to see County beaten by Tranmere Rovers to miss out on promotion to League One.

But the national manager, who is preparing his squad for Euro 2020 qualifiers in Croatia on June 8 and Hungary on June 11, has been impressed with the Rodney Parade outfit this season.

And he’s predicting a bright future for Flynn, who has been linked with the vacant Swansea City and Plymouth Argyle jobs this week.

“I’ve watched Newport a couple of times this year, and saw them last year as well, and I’m disappointed for them and for Mike as well,” said Giggs.

“He’s an infectious character and he’s done brilliant since he took over at Newport so I’m really disappointed. I thought they were really unlucky as well.”

Flynn is currently second favourite with the bookmakers, behind Tranmere’s Micky Mellon, to replace Graham Potter at the Liberty Stadium.

And he’s also second favourite, behind Bury boss Ryan Lowe, to replace Derek Adams at League Two rivals Argyle.

That is no surprise to Giggs, who is a big fan of the job that Flynn has done at Rodney Parade.

“I think a lot of people have been linked [with the Swansea job] and, after what he’s done for Newport, I can see why his name is being bandied about,” added the Manchester United legend.

“It's because of what he’s done and the character that he is and the success he’s had this season.”

Cameron Toshack, son of former Swans and Wales manager John, and Coventry City boss Mark Robins are also rumoured to be in the running.
