A COMMUNITY-LED proposal to establish a splash pad on the former Cold Knap Lido site, has received a positive response from the Vale council and residents.

Last week, the Barry & District News revealed the idea proposed by former Pride in Barry chairman and Barry regeneration board member, Paul Haley to provide a family-friendly facility on the grassy site.

The lido opened in 1926 and closed in 1996.

The dad-of-two said the facility in Pencoedtre park, Gibbonsdown, had been immensely popular and a town the size of Barry could easily accommodate two water parks.

A Vale council spokesman said: “The splash pad at Pencoedtre park has been a huge success and attracts families from all across the town.

“The Council is always looking for ways to enhance the Vale’s other parks and public spaces, however, the cost of installing similar facilities elsewhere would be significant.

“It is always encouraging to see community groups come together to find ways of improving their local area.

“We would be happy to discuss any proposals the group may have to fund another splash pad – or any other improvements - and the ongoing running costs.”

Mr Haley said he welcomed the very positive comments from the Vale council towards a Splash Park for The Knap.

He said: “They are obviously a key stakeholder and I have contacted their community asset transfer (CAT) department for exploratory dialogue.

If a CAT has potential, this will give focus to the formation of a community-led group to create a credible team and a viable business plan.”

Mr Haley added: The social media response has been overwhelmingly positive in such a short space of time.

“I have also been receiving offers of support and assistance.”

“We will develop the eco theme and encourage other methods of travel such as cycling and walking.
