FROM the Archive this week features a photograph of the SS Walkure in 1908.
On August 13, 1908 the SS Walkure of Hamburg was taking on board coal when without warning she became unstable and keeled over.
There was considerable shipping in the docks at that time.
The SS Walkure hit and damaged the SS Trevessa however it was thought this prevented the Walkure from being totally capsized.
German and Chinese crew on board scrambled to get off the ship as did a gang of coal trimmers who managed to get ashore unhurt.
A large number of townspeople rushed to the scene and continued to do so during the rest of the week to watch the salvage operations.
Four locomotives were used to pull the ship into a vertical position.
This postcard sent to Calcutta in 1908 pokes fun at the incident, "New method of discharging deck cargo in Barry".
