FROM the Archive this week features a photograph of Benjamin George Coultas.
He was born in Barry on March 10, 1898 to Gerald and Sarah Coultas.
His father was Evangelist Rev. G. Coultas who arrived in the town in 1895 and established The Gospel Tent Mission in a field opposite the Vale council offices, which was then the Gas Works.
The Mission later moved to a iron church, in Merthyr Street, Barry, which later became the site of Dinham Hall.
Sadly Sarah died, aged 38, in 1901.
She is buried in Merthyr Dyfan Cemetery, Barry.
Not long after Rev. Coultas left Barry along with a Benjamin and his siblings.
While Benjamin never returned to Barry he served in World War One and settled in Canada where he died, aged 88, in 1986.
The Barry & District News would like to thank Cllr Shirley Hodges for the photograph and information.
