Perhaps it’s appropriate after Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day to bring out this photograph of the ‘recruiting bandwagon’ in action in Chepstow’s Beaufort Square, in what must have been the early stages of the First World War, when bunting was still appropriate.
The message, however, remained consistent – as the banner proclaims, For King and Country.

The staging has been erected outside the Argus newspaper office and Davis estate agent, which were then located in the block of buildings, demolished in 1919, adjacent to the Old Bank building, highlighted a few weeks ago.
In the background at the left, Blandford’s butcher shop at 20 High Street can also be seen.
