MORE than 160 girls from primary schools across Torfaen took part in a five-a-side football festival at Cwmbran Stadium.

Teams from 25 schools entered the competition, with girls taking part from school years three, four, five and six.

The teams were playing for a chance to represent County in the Community in a tournament at Cardiff City FC.

Padre Pio met Blaenavon HVC in the year five/six final, where, in a close fought contest, Padre Pio came out on top, winning 3-2 on penalties.

They will now head to the capital city to take part in the tournament, held on March 26, for a place at the Premier League Stars under 11s girls tournament for south west clubs.

Supported by County in the Community, Torfaen Leisure Trust and local football clubs, the festival was held to further raise the profile of girls football in Torfaen and create more opportunities for girls to join local clubs.

Football clubs including Coed Eva, Llanyravon, Fairfield United, Tranch and Torfaen Coaching Academy were all in attendance to offer support and scout for talent.

Sports development officer Jacob Guy said: "The girls only programme forms part of our Torfaen Sports 'Focus Sports' projects, which primarily target a specific group or sport to increase opportunities and links to local clubs.

"It’s a perfect environment for young people to try it out and if keen, join a club."
