SCHOOLS across Torfaen have building maintenance backlogs that together are estimated to total around £14.4 million, according to the latest figures - though the biggest single bill is set to disappear .
Of the 32 council-run schools in the county borough, just three primary schools have no maintenance backlog. They are Blenheim Road Primary, Llantarnam Primary and Ysgol Panteg.
The remaining 23 primary schools have a maintenance backlog totalling £6.5 million, which averages out as £282,600 per school.
Torfaen’s six secondary schools have a maintenance backlog of £7.9 million, which is an average of £1.3 million per school.

Of all the schools with a maintenance backlog, Croesyceiliog has the largest with £2.4 million - although now the replacement school has opened, this will disappear from future figures. Blaenavon Heritage VC Primary has the smallest backlog, with £9,100.
Penygarn Primary was the only school where the current maintenance backlog was unknown.
Torfaen County Borough Council said that the costs are generally due to the age of the schools.
The 21st Century schools programme will hopefully tackle the backlog when buildings are refurbished or replaced under the Welsh Government-backed programme.
The council said that most of the costs relate to small maintenance works such as redecoration or refurbishing toilet blocks.
However, some sites do require major work, such as a boiler replacement, complete rewiring, or a flat roof replacement.
