ANOTHER one of the museum's donors to its lockdown School Memories Project was Sandra Rudd (nee Waters), who attended Park Terrace Infant and Junior School in Pontypool from 1951-1957.

The school (now gone) was most unusual in having a playground on the roof of the two-storey, red brick building which was used for ‘drill’ – beanbag and ball games.

Mrs Rudd said: “Milk time was a favourite of mine when a crate of small bottles was bought into class and we were given a bottle each with a straw at breaktime. During winter we thawed them on the big radiator before we could drink them.

“I remember there being no milk available for some time so we were given Horlicks tablets to suck instead.

“I went home for lunch [Mrs Rudd only lived next door to the school] but those who had school dinners had to walk down to Town School each day for their lunch.

“I recall three school trips: one to Bristol Zoo, one to St Fagans and one to Cheddar Gorge and Wells Cathedral.

“On the last day of school at Park Terrace I was heartbroken and sat on the stairs crying as I didn’t want to leave. I passed my 11+ and went to the County (Girls School, Penygarn) another school I loved and have fond memories of there too.”

Thank you so much Mrs Rudd for sharing her memories and so we have a record of them in the museum archives for the future.
