WITH the seasons and the weather on the change, nothing beats the taste of a warm soup and a roll.

Throughout north and west Cumbria there is lots of places to indulge in the homely meal that comes into its own during autumn.

Whether it’s traditional tomato, minestrone or a concoction put together by a local store, here in no particular order are readers recommendations:

1 ARCHES COFFEE HOUSE, CARLISLE

The cafe on Fisher Street is a popular choice.

Alexandra Bainbridge said: “The Arches Coffee House has the best lentil and vegetable soup.

“The accompaniments are also gorgeous, everything is homemade and fresh.

“I live in Liverpool now and always crave this cafes soup, it just reminds me of home and nobody else’s will compare.”

2 BUTTERFLIES, WORKINGTON

The Pow Street cafe has an army of admirers.

3 1878 COFFEE LOUNGE, CARLISLE

The cafe at the Rosehill Industrial Estate has a fan in reader Donna Jefferson

She said: “They do the most amazing soup, my favourite is the pea and ham because it is both sweet and tangy and has pieces of pioneer’s very own pulled ham throughout.

“They serve it with a fresh baked crusty roll with that posh butter that comes in cylindrical rolls.

“The presentation is fab and the prices are quite reasonable.

“Most ingredients they use in the cafe are from the food hall downstairs and I can’t recommend their food enough.”

4 THE CAPON TREE, BRAMPTON

Based in Front Street, Louise Lewis posted: “Best place for delicious homemade fayre.

“Their afternoon teas are top notch.”

5 GRETNA BAKERY, CARLISLE

6 HERCITI, MARYPORT

Based in Crosby Street Pauline Scott is a big fan, she said: “Their soup and scone is delicious. The French Onion with a cheese scone is my favourite.

7 THE POT PLACE, PENRITH

Based at Station Yard Paula Thompson said: “The sweet potato and leek soup is amazing.”
