Gardens and porches around Ulverston and as far afield as Manchester were lit with colourful birds and bug lanterns - as volunteers made sure Ulverston's popular lantern festival didn't fall victim to the pandemic.

The festival, which usually includes a procession of creative lanterns through the town was cancelled this year, due to the restrictions around crowds due to Covid-19.

However organisers were keen not to let the festival fall victim to the crisis, and instead set about arranging a virtual festival.

People were encouraged to create lanterns of bees and bugs, place them outside their homes, and post pictures online or send them to the organisers.

Chair of the festival’s organising committee, Chris Nelson said the event was great success, and he hopes the real thing can return next year. He said: “We were absolutely delighted with how everything went and how well people took to it.

“We’ve had some great comments and feedback from people who have been fantastic, we even had people from as far away as Manchester who were sending In pictures of that they made.

“People have been saying it has been so nice to have an event that hasn’t been fully impacted by Covid.

“We’ve had some great creations, and it has been fantastic to be able to just keep all of this going through the Covid-19 crisis.

"Hopefully next year we can have people back on the streets for the procession, but obviously this year it wasn’t possible. It has been a great effort to get all of this organised by the volunteers.”
