A NINE-year-old from Oswestry has been praised by her family, friends and school teachers after saving her mum’s life.

Grace Thomas-Jones, of Woodside School, woke at 5am last Wednesday to find her mother, Hayley Jones, suffering a seizure.

It is the first time Hayley has experienced a seizure, with the 45-year-old saying she saw horrible bright lights, before began shaking with froth coming from her mouth, according to Grace.

Despite being in such a difficult situation, Grace kept calm and dialled the ambulance service using her mum’s mobile phone, and stayed with her until paramedics arrived.

She explained how tuning in to one of her favourite soap operas had familiarised her with what a seizure looks like.

“A lot of the time, I know it’s a funny thing, I go to my grandparents house where I have a laptop and I watch a lot of old Coronation Street episodes from the past,” Grace said.

“I have seen people having seizures on the programme before and so I know what it looks like.

“When I first started hearing my mum shout and saw what was happening, I knew it would be a seizure, so I rang the ambulance.

“I tried to ring my dad first before getting on the phone to the ambulance. The ambulance was very helpful, the lady stayed on the phone with me until they arrived.”

Hayley believes the quick response of her daughter has saved her life, and described her as an inspiration.

She said: “I’ve never had a seizure. It was obviously both scary for myself and for Grace.

“If I could give her an award for bravery, I would. She’s just amazing – I wouldn’t be here if she hadn’t done what she did.

“She’s just a credit, and I just want to thank her for being so brave and using her initiative.

“She’s an inspiration and I don’t think she realises what she has done.”

As well as praise from her mother, Grace’s friends and teachers who know what she has done have spoken very highly of her.

Grace added: “A lot of my teachers know what I’ve done and they’ve all told me they’re very proud of me.

“I couldn’t live the rest of my life without mum, it would really hurt me. I would feel so upset and it would be horrible.

“We have so much fun together and I love her to bits, we have such a good time. I’m proud of what I did as well and would do the same for all of my family members.”
