BLAENAVON residents have raised concerns over speeding along two roads leading into the town.

Varteg Road and Cwmavon Road have been highlighted as particular areas of concern.

Mayor of Blaenavon, Cllr Alan Jones, said the town council were having Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs) installed along Varteg Road and Cwmavon Road within the next few months.

SIDs are signs activated by vehicles driving past, which detect and display the speed in which that vehicle is going.

One resident, Anne Lister, said clearer signage was one way that could combat the speeding, though she was concerned people would just ignore the signs.

"It's almost as if people coming down the hill [from the Varteg] come in to the town and accelerate," she said.

"I've seen quite a few people driving on the wrong side of the road from where they've been coming down too fast.

"There's been lots of times where it has been quite frightening.

"Since we moved in four years ago, we have had quite a few of our neighbours have lost their pets on the road.

"I'm concerned for children as you see them walking down there for the buses.

"I would like there to be an active speed camera. Or at least clearer signage, as the signs they do have are not very prominent.

"My worry is the people who are doing this are unlikely to pay attention to this."

Daisy May Edwards lost her cat after it was hit by a car on Varteg Road. She said she hoped new measures would come in to help manage people's speed entering the town.

"My parents live on the road in Blaenavon from the Varteg," she said. "It really is an issue.

"My cat was killed on that road.

"You see cars and bikes racing up there. You see so many near misses.

"It seems like a real issue but I'm not sure what can be done about it.

"I think speed bumps would slow people down, but they might affect buses trying to get up the steep hill.

"But I think some more signs or a speed camera would work. Something should be done.

"The other area is Cwmavon Road, people treat it like a national speed limit area.

"Something needs to be done before someone gets seriously hurt, whether that's signs, a speed camera or a lower speed limit.

"The amount of people walking along there with their kids or dogs, I'd hate to see someone be in the wrong place at the wrong time."
