THE NEW 7Q Art Gallery, Chepstow are currently hosting an exhibition of work by highly acclaimed local artist Patricia Howells who recently passed away at the age of 91.

Ms Howells is described by the gallery as a real undiscovered gem.

She lived and painted in Chepstow for many years, only recently retiring from teaching art aged 89.

She was inspired throughout her lifetime to paint the stunning views around her including the Wye Valley, Forest of Dean and Brecon Beacons.

In an excerpt from her diary, shared by nephew Jon Alport, Ms Howells said: "I have found such health and happiness in a way of life many would envy.

"I think to teach Art as a form of self expression has been a colossal part of this enjoyment. Covid has proven to me how valuable art therapy can be in expressing ones feelings and helping to exorcise insecurities and doubt.

"My students growth towards painting their personalities within their pictures was an unexpected bonus for them as well as myself.

"Past and present students have my respect and much affection. Everyone of them added to the spirit of the studio and to the colour of my life”.

Ms Howells' family have unearthed a large quantity of her paintings, previously unseen by the public, and these are now being sold online at patriciahowells.co.uk

The paintings are now also on display at the recently opened 7Q Gallery, Chepstow.

The exhibition has gained much interest from collectors and there is also talk of a book to be published focusing on Ms Howells' life as an artist.

She grew up in Brecon and studied at Cardiff College of Art where she achieved the National Diploma in Design.

She went on to gain an art teacher’s diploma and worked in several local schools including Lydney school and St Johns on the Hill in Chepstow, before establishing her own studio originally in Hocker Hill Street, Chepstow.

The exhibition runs at 7Q Gallery until Sunday, 18th April, so don't miss this chance to snap up a piece of local history.

7Q Gallery is open from 10am-4pm on Saturday and Sunday.
