THIS week’s photograph celebrates both family car outings and weddings
At the wheel of the car is George Webb, outside his workshop at Crocker’s Ash in about 1903.
In the back of the car is his wife Annie and her sister Sue – on the occasion of Sue’s wedding. George Webb began his business selling bicycles and in 1889 set up The Ganarew and West of England Cycle Company Ltd at Crocker’s Ash, and moved into motor cars and motorcycles establishing the Priory Street Motor Company in Monmouth.
He made developments to motorcycles, and also patented a new type of car wheel with a ‘detachable and divisible rim’ that came apart allowing a puncture to be repaired more easily at the roadside - the forerunner of the spare wheel.
