THESE ten areas of Wales currently have the worst Covid rates in the country.

All of the top ten have seen Covid cases in more than 1 in every 100 people over the last seven days.

MSOA (middle layer super output areas) data released by Public Health Wales shows the ten areas that have some of the highest rates in Wales.

The latest weekly figures reveal two areas have rates north of 1,700 cases per 100,000 people.

The highest rate across Wales is Pontardawe, in Neath Port Talbot.

The area recorded 212 new cases in the seven days between September 12 and September 18.

That gives it the highest Covid rate in Wales over the period, with 1725 cases per 100,000 people.

Second is Tylorstown in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

The 102 new cases recorded in the area gives it a Covid rate of 1722.4 cases per 100,000 people.

Rhondda Cynon Taf is the local authority that appears most frequently in the top ten.

Four areas of the county are among the worst areas for Covid in the country, with Glyncoch & Ynysybwl, Pentre and Treherbert all making the list along with Tylorstown.

Three areas of Swansea also make the list, as does North Blackwood, Argoed & Markham in Caerphilly, Lower Penarth & Sully in the Vale of Glamorgan, and Pontardawe in Neath Port Talbot.

These are the parts of Wales with the highest Covid rates in the country over the last seven days:

  • Pontardawe – 1725 cases per 100,000 people
  • Tylorstown – 1722.4 cases per 100,000 people
  • North Blackwood, Argoed & Markham – 1480.7 cases per 100,000 people
  • Lower Penarth & Sully – 1452 cases per 100,000 people
  • Treherbert – 1415.9 cases per 100,000 people
  • Llangyfelach & Tircoed – 1332.2 cases per 100,000 people
  • Maesteg North – 1241 cases per 100,000 people
  • Glyncoch & Ynysybwl – 1237.7 cases per 100,000 people
  • Townhill – 1231.0 cases per 100,000 people
  • Pentre – 1228.0 cases per 100,000 people
