EIGHT of the nine teams were involved in cup matches at the weekend with Thornwell Red & White B thrashing Port & Sud B 10-1 in the Fishwick Cup preliminary round, writes Bob Cypher.

According to the B team’s Terry Woodward, some players missed out on selection.

“Good to see so many people available! Shame a few had to miss out but numbers are very good,” he said later.

“We played some really good stuff in patches, Alex Shoeffer scoring four times in the first half.

“Tony Reynolds (2), Rob Wood (2), Ben Hughes and Gavin Ellis scored the others."

“It was another steady game from Josh Walker and our goalkeeper Dan Northey,” Woodward added.

Meanwhile, in the Centenary Cup preliminary, Chepstow Town won 7-1 at Sudbrook B in a match which saw the wind dominate.

Chepstow keeper Sean Canavan said a strong wind played a major part in the game.

“The first half was even and we struggled to break down Sudbrook with wind dominating,” he said later.

“Sudbrook scored and led 1-0 at half time but we equalised through Kris Gordon and took control.

“We enjoyed the majority of the possession and further goals from Carl Bailey, Phil Bailey, Chris Hooper 2, Matt Owen and Pete Haysom put us in the First Round.”

In the Benevolent Cup preliminary, Caldicot Town won 6-1 at Caldicot Castle B and Tintern Abbey beat visitors Raglan 3-1 in what Darryl Reynolds described as a closely-fought game.

“We took the lead when Geraint Reynolds was brought down in the box and converted the spot kick,” he said.

“Tintern extended their lead through a deflected effort from Taka Yamagata but just before the break an error gave Raglan a way back in, scoring after a point-blank save by Abbey goalkeeper Jamie Barnes.

“The second half was a cagey affair and the result could have gone either way but Tintern’s changes made the difference.

“A long throw by substitute Stuart Williams was headed home by Micky Brett and Niall Hayes made two goal-line clearances at a Raglan corner to keep the game at 3-1.

“With the help of new signing and Abbey legend Darren Luff marshalling the defence we progress to the next round later this month where we will meet Thornwell R&W A.”
