ELLIOT Frewen scored a stunning solo try, and fellow wing Harri Lang got another, but it was a familiar tale as Newport slumped to a fourth successive defeat in the Indigo Group Premiership at Carmarthen Park.

The high-flying Quins picked up a bonus-point to stay in second place as they did the double over the Black & Ambers, having beaten them in the National Cup earlier in the season.

Frewen’s try aside, scything through from half-way to speed to the posts in the second half, it was another difficult day for Rhys Jenkins’ side. They have now lost eight of their 11 games this season.

Playing into the wind in the first half, the Black & Ambers started well enough and Matt O’Brien kicked them deep into the home 22 from a penalty to set-up a driving line-out opportunity. It came to nothing in the end, but O’Brien got the score board moving with a 10th minute penalty.

That score stung the Quins into action and from the re-start they managed to turn-over Newport 35 metres out and conjured up a break that saw Scarlets scrum half Jonathan Evans cross for a try at the posts that Steff Marshall converted.

That put the home side ahead and they were never behind from there on. They tried to use their chief weapon, the driving line-out, on a number of occasions, but Newport were this time up to the task having conceded two tries in their cup defeat.

Eventually they got one to work and hooker Torin Myhill was driven over on the half-hour mark for a try that Marshall again improved. Newport ended the half on a high with a second O’Brien penalty and were still hanging on by their fingertips at the break.

But two tries in five minutes at the start of the second half killed off any realistic hopes of an away win. Evans took a quick line-out deep in his own half to set up a move that saw the outstanding Ed Siggery burst up to the Newport 22 before Osian Knott sent Curtis Ford in at the corner.

Moments later a cross-kick by Marshall wasn’t dealt with by the Newport defence and a kind bounce allowed the Quins to re-gather. Two passes later and full back Dale Ford was over again, and this time Marshall added the extras.

The heavens then opened to add further misery to proceedings for the visitors, although they stuck to their task and worked their way back into the contest. Frewen’s outstanding score, converted by O’Brien, came 12 minutes into the second period and the rest of the game was all about the visitors closing the gap further.

Marshall missed a simple penalty for the Quins and then they had replacement hooker Taylor Davies sent to the sin-bin for side entry as Newport pushed for a try. That meant passive scrums and Newport finally took advantage of their extra man by freeing Lang on the right wing to score in the corner.

O’Brien’s superb touchline conversion meant it was a one score game, but there were no more scores. Newport did, however, leave with a losing bonus-point.
