East Gwent League

AFTER booking their place in one cup final just before Christmas, Thornwell Red & White A can make progress in another competition this weekend, writes Bob Cypher.

Following a deserved 5-1 victory against Pontnewydd United, the club will face a more challenging foe when they visit Iscoed Tafarn in the Benevolent Cup quarter final in Underwood on Saturday.

A lot will depend on the form of Thornwell's Steph Reynolds and Tafarn’s Josh Codd.

If they have a good day it will offer a tough test for both defences.

Also hoping to add some silverware at the end of the season are Caldicot Castle A, who entertain Undy Athletic.

Two Division Two sides can also book places in the semi finals with Chepstow Town welcoming Sudbrook CC B and Caldicot Town at home to Rockfield Rovers.

With the cup competition in the closing stages, clubs already eliminated will be looking to improve their league position.

Monmouth Town will offer visitors Sudbrook CC A a tough test while Portskewett & Sudbrook A welcome Severn Tunnel to the Rec.

Division Two’s Thornwell R&W B are home to Port & Sud B, Tintern Abbey entertain Raglan and Chepstow Athletic host Caldicot Castle B.

The kick-off times vary with the cup ties starting at 1.15pm and the league matches an hour later.
