EBBW Vale are at the wrong end of the table but a pair of their backs are towards the top of the Premiership charts heading into 2020.

The Steelmen are at the bottom of the league and in the relegation spot.

Greg Woods' team are a point back on Bridgend, although they have a game in hand, while Gwent rivals Newport are five away.

The Steelmen entertain Merthyr on Friday night while the Black and Ambers play a vital game against the Ravens at the Brewery Field on Saturday afternoon.

Ebbw may be struggling but Dan Haymond has had a fine start to the campaign from the tee with the versatile back battling with Billy McBryde at the top of the points chart.

The RGC fly-half has 117 points at the moment but Haymond is on 109 with a success rate of 78 per cent, while Newport playmaker Matt O'Brien is on 72 points and has made 71 per cent of his attempts at goal.

Ebbw winger Ewan Rosser also enjoyed a fine start to the year with the 18-year-old from Abersychan, young brother of Dragons speedster Jared, crossing six times. He is one behind Carmarthen Quins hooker Torin Myhill.

Newport forwards Josh Skinner and Kyle Tayler are in the charts with the former having made 79 tackles and the latter racking up 11 turnovers.

It will come as no surprise that the elusive Black and Ambers back Elliot Frewen has racked up six line breaks, four behind his former teammate Chay Smith after he swapped Rodney Parade for Aberavon. Newport's highly-rated full-back Dai Richards has scored four tries and made five clean breaks.

Ebbw forward Dan Hill is third in the table for carries with 107, trailing Cardiff's former Pontypool back rower Morgan Allen (129).

The Blue and Blacks suffered a first defeat of the season at Pontypridd on Saturday night but head into the New Year with a healthy 14-point lead, although Carmarthen and Aberavon both have games in hand on Steve Law's side.

Leaders: points – Billy McBryde (RGC, 117), tries – Torin Myhill (Carmarthen, 7), tackles – Callum Bowden (Swansea, 119), turnovers – Sean Moore (Pontypridd, 18), line breaks – Chay Smith (Aberavon, 10), carries – Morgan Allen (Cardiff, 129)
