Monmouthshire Windows East Gwent League Division 1

CALDICOT Castle A returned to the top of Division 1 with a 2-1 home win over Iscoed Tafarn at the weekend, writes Bob Cypher.

Two points behind are Tafarn on 29 points and Monmouth Town Reserves - who did not have a match - remain third.

Thornwell Red & White A lost 2-1 at home to Severn Tunnel, but are still fourth on 23 points with a superior goal difference keeping them ahead of Tunnel.

The visitors’ player-coach Paul Light played upfront and opened the scoring.

Chris Taylor added the second and Tunnel were in command until five minutes from time when Stephan Reynolds reduced the deficit.

“We were always on top and we could have been further ahead but we wasted a couple of one-on-ones,” Light said later,

“It was goalless in the first half but after the break it was all us.

“They put us under pressure in the last 15 minutes but I think we deserved the win with the chances we had.

“Everyone played really well and the result makes the league title run-in more exciting.”

Elsewhere, Sudbrook CC A lost 2-1 at home to Undy Athletic and Rockfield Rovers and Portskewett & Sudbrook shared the points in a 0-0 draw.

This Saturday Severn Tunnel entertain Iscoed Tafarn, Rockfield Rovers are home to Undy Athletic, Port & Sud A welcome Monmouth Town and Thornwell A visit Sudbrook A. Kick-off at 2.15pm

Caldicot Castle are in Amateur Cup action at home to Nantyglo in a Fourth Round tie, kick-off 1.30pm.
